I must spend hundreds of pounds a year buying fruit and nut bars. You know the ones, Nakd, Pulsin, Bounce. If you’ve ever been to Whole Foods you know the list could go on and on. I love these bars, mainly mid-afternoon at work and before or after the gym but they are so damn expensive. I’ve been known to go into Holland and Barrett and spend nearly £10 on 4 or 5 bars – insane!
So today I attempted to make my own, and it turned out pretty well! I basically chucked in everything I had in my cupboard and ended up with these chocolate chia protein balls. These are nut free (I didn’t have any nut butter at the time!)
Here’s what was in them:
3-4 tablespoons hot water
Heaped tablespoon of coco powder (I used Green and Blacks)
1 scoop of chocolate protein powder (I used Sun Warrior)
2 tablespoons of chia seed
2 tablespoons of oats
As I don’t have a food processor, I bashed everything up in a pestle and mortar but it would probably work better in a food processor.
- Mash or blitz the dates into a paste and then add in the hot water until the mixture loosens – it shouldn’t be too runny.
- Add the protein powder and coco powder and mix thoroughly.
- Add in the chia seeds and oats and mix until combined – add a splash more water if you need to.
- Shape into balls and wrap in foil or store in an airtight container in the fridge
My mixture made four very large balls!
